In the first ten-day period of February 2019, Ukraine faced mostly warm weather conditions compared with the standard level, with rather little depth of precipitations.
Throughout the most part of the country, the average oblast air temperature increased by 4.1-5.9°C compared with the standard rates, while in Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Ternopil and Lviv oblasts — up 2.6-3.8°C, and varied within the range of -1.8...+2.5°C.
The minimum air temperature reduced to -3...-8°C, but in Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Zakarpattia oblasts the figures varied within -9...-12°C.
In addition, the maximum air temperature increased to +3...8°C, while in southern oblasts, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Volyn, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia oblasts — to +9...14°C.
At night, in most part of the country the soil or snow surface temperature cooled to -8...-13°C, while in Vinnytsia, Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts — to -14...-17°C. In southern oblasts, Luhansk, Rivne and Volyn oblasts, the minimum soil temperature reduced to the level of -4...-7°C.
On the warmest days, the soil surface heated to nearly +10...18°C, while in Luhansk, Kharkiv, Poltava, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kyiv, Cherkasy and Ternopil oblasts — to +1...8°C.
For 1-3 days, rather uneven precipitations developed throughout the whole territory of the country. Only in Sumy, Chernihiv and Kyiv oblasts, the average precipitation depth varied within 73-100% of the ten-day standard (8-11 mm). In the other oblasts of the country, the ten-day precipitation depth did not exceed 1-4 mm, while in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kirovohrad and Ivano-Frankivsk oblasts there were no precipitations at all.
In the reporting period, the relative humidity of the air in the country varied within the average range of 66-95%.
As of February 10, in southern and western oblasts, Zhytomyr oblast, most raions of Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk oblasts, as well as some raions of Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Donetsk and Kyiv oblasts, snow covering in the fields was absent, or its depth did not exceed 1-9 cm. In the remaining part of the country, the snow cover depth even reached 11-38 cm, and in mountainous raions of the Carpathians (the meteorological station Pozhezhevska, Ivano-Frankivsk oblast) — 85 cm.
In the reporting period, in most oblasts of the country the depth of soil freezing varied within 1-10 cm. In some western raions, as well as Dnipropetrovsk, Luhansk, Sumy, Kyiv and Zhytomyr oblasts, the figures reached 11-35 cm. In most raions of southern oblasts, Chernihiv, Zakarpattia oblasts, some raions of Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kyiv and Kirovohrad oblasts, there were thawed soil processes.
At the end of the reporting period, in some raions of Volyn and Lviv oblasts the upper soil layers started thawing at the depth of 5-6 cm.
For 1-3 days, in some raions of Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Rivne, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv oblasts the wind speed increased to 15-18 m/s.
In the reporting ten-day period, winter crops were in the condition of winter dormancy, only in raions of southern oblasts there was observed temporary restoring of vegetation processes.
The minimum soil temperature at the tillering zone depth of winter crops and perennial grasses (3 cm) totaled -1...-4°C, which exceeded the critical temperature of crops freezing.
In the remaining part of the month, the weather conditions for further crops development in Ukraine will be quite good.
