According to Oil World analysts, in the second quarter of 2019 Turkey increased the imports of sunflower seed in 2.5 times — to 585 thsd tonnes, against 236 thsd tonnes in April-June of 2018. In particular, in June 2019 Turkey imported 182 thsd tonnes of the oilseed (in June 2018 — 74 thsd tonnes).
At the same time, in April-June the imports of soybeans decreased by 25% year over year — from 1.115 mln tonnes to 838 thsd tonnes, including 205 thsd tonnes supplied in June 2019 (down 17%).
In addition, for several recent months Russia and Moldova became the main countries-exporters of sunflower seed to Turkey, and increased its presence on the Turkish market, while Bulgaria and Romania exported almost the same volumes as last year.
Due to the forecast of the large-scale harvest of sunflower seed in the country, and temporary increasing of the import duties (since July 25 to February 1, 2020), analysts expected that in the current year the imports of sunflower seed to Turkey will somewhat decrease.
